  102. MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - A dog sent to death row for chasing a horse was 
  103. given a reprieve Thursday.
  104.  
  105. Jackson County Commissioners passed an ordinance that lets the 
  106. collie-malamute mix named Nadas off the hook if his owner agrees 
  107. to ship him off to the wilds of Utah to live out his days at an animal
  108. sanctuary.
  109.  
  110. ``I'm sure we will do what's best for Nadas,'' said Sharon Roach, 
  111. whose 22-year-old son, Sean, raised the dog from a puppy.
  112.  
  113. But first, they want to carefully consider the conditions of the measure,
  114. which include dropping a lawsuit against the county.
  115.  
  116. ``It has been a long hard battle,'' she said. ``Emotionally, it has been
  117. really devastating.''
  118.  
  119. Linda Rowe of the Portland animal advocacy group Watchdog said the 
  120. ordinance was not a total solution. Dog owners still need a chance to 
  121. correct a problem before a case gets to the point of death or banishment.
  122.  
  123. ``If Nadas can be spared, that's wonderful,'' she said. ``But there are three
  124. other dogs in this state on death row.''
  125.  
  126. Nadas was sentenced to death for chasing a horse in 1996 under a state law
  127. that allows counties to destroy dogs that kill, injure or chase livestock.
  128.  
  129. Sean Roach, who manages a storage business in Ashland, hasn't seen his dog
  130. since he was seized by an animal control officer nearly two years ago. 
  131. Since then, Roach and his mother have paid the county more than $4,000 
  132. to feed and board the dog, who has been kept at a secret location.
  133.  
  134. Support for Nadas has been building for months over the Internet and among
  135. animal rights advocates, and peaked this week after the tabloid TV show ``Hard
  136. Copy'' aired the story. That prompted a deluge of telephone calls that jammed
  137. emergency lines at the county airport fire department.
  138.  
  139. While enacting the ordinance, commissioners pointed out that 1,700 dogs 
  140. are euthanized in Jackson County each year because owners don't properly 
  141. care for them, and livestock owners have a right to expect protection for
  142. their
  143. animals, as well.
  144.  
  145. ``This is a dispute between urban and rural people,'' said commission
  146. Chairwoman Sue Kupillas, herself a cattle rancher. ``What we hope is 
  147. urban and rural people will learn to settle these disputes.''
  148.  
  149. The ordinance requires a dog owner to request a hearing and prove the 
  150. chased livestock suffered no injury. Dogs determined to have injured or 
  151. killed livestock would be euthanized.
  152.  
  153. The dog owner must pay the cost of a veterinary inspection of the livestock
  154. and a $100 penalty to cover the cost of the hearing. The cost of shipping the
  155. dog to a sanctuary also would be paid by the owner.

  171. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - An animal-rights activist walked onto a stage and pushed
  172. a tofu cream pie into the face of the chairman of Procter & Gamble Co. as he
  173. was receiving an award from the governor Thursday night.
  174.  
  175. The woman, a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, followed
  176. John E. Pepper to the podium during the awards banquet. She hit him with the
  177. pie and said: ``Procter & Gamble poisons animals! Shame on you, John Pepper!
  178. Shame on you!''
  179.  
  180. An audience of about 200 people witnessed the episode. Police detained the
  181. woman for questioning.
  182.  
  183. Michael McGraw, a spokesman for PETA in Norfolk, Va., identified the woman as
  184. Melynda Duval of Virginia Beach, Va. McGraw said he did not know her age.
  185.  
  186. McGraw said the reason for the attack was the Cincinnati-based company's
  187. continued use of live animals in laboratory product testing.
  188.  
  189. ``Sometimes a polite word doesn't do it,'' he said. That's why we sometimes do
  190. unusual things, such as slinging tofu cream pies.''
  191.  
  192. Pepper was one of seven recipients of a Governor's Award, given each year
  193. during the annual meeting of the Ohio Newspaper Association. The awards were
  194. presented by Gov. George Voinovich, who was on the stage at the time of the
  195. attack.

  197. Pepper wiped the pie from his face, accepted a plaque from Voinovich and
  198. started an acceptance speech by saying: ``This will be a memorable event for
  199. more reasons than one.''
  200.  
  201. On Feb. 4, pranksters in Brussels, Belgium, hit Microsoft Corp. Chairman 
  202. Bill Gates with three pies.
